This fantasy drama about an angel who becomes human in order to sample a slice of real life is director Wim Wenders' follow-up to his other angel saga Wings of Desire. The idea is rather eccentric and it's carried out in eccentric style by Wenders. Something of a curate's egg, it is not quite the sum of its interesting parts, although it's never boring. Otto Sander as the angel Cassiel heads an odd cast that includes Nastassja Kinski, Horst Buchholz, Willem Dafoe, Peter Falk, Lou Reed and, would you believe, Mikhail Gorbachev! The music's good too with tracks from Reed, Nick Cave and U2 among others. Highly idiosyncratic: Wenders' fans should love it.
