The Road to Wellville

The term 'toilet humour' was tailor-made for Alan Parker's bizarre comedy, set in a turn-of-the-century health farm run by crackpot Dr John Harvey Kellogg, inventor of the cornflake. Anthony Hopkins is the scatologically obsessed doctor determined to get to the bottom of every ailment, while Bridget Fonda, Matthew Broderick, John Cusack, Dana Carvey and Lara Flynn Boyle are among the fruitcakes and hypochondriacs ready for inspection.

Appropriately accompanied by Edwardian oompah music, this satirical comedy about sex and other bodily functions is the 'adult' cinema's equivalent of a Restoration romp.

Mel Brooks would love it and the man in the dirty mac won't think it's bad either. Lewd, crude and rude, its fun centres on the Battle Creek Sanitarium, where bogus Dr Kellogg (yes, there's a subplot about cereals), played by Anthony Hopkins, presides over a health farm where, as he puts it, 'the spirit soars, the mind is educated and the bowels are born again. The Road to Wellville '

The action is mainly about sexual frustration and stimulation, involving a young married couple (Matthew Broderick, Bridget Fonda) who are out of sorts in the loo and in bed.

Everything that you could imagine emerging from any part of the body is dwelt on at some length, while Hopkins, buck teeth jammed into the top of his mouth, wrestles with an American accent and a script that's often as flatulent as several of the characters.

The beautifully observed period detail would grace a much more elegant (and better) film.
