Believe it or not, this film actually started life as a musical. But then after test audiences gave the film a thumbs down, producer/director/writer James L Brooks cut the musical numbers out, leaving us with an uneven but intermittently amusing romantic comedy. Given that stars Nick Nolte and Albert Brooks aren't famed for their tonsorial talents, this imperfect end result is probably a blessing. Basically it's the story of an out-of-work actor (Nolte) trying to bond with his six-year-old daughter (Whittni Wright). As the kid ain't that loveable, one spends much of the film wondering why he's bothering. If the film had started life as a non-musical, it may have been better, but the end result is so obviously not what was originally planned.
