The actor, who is best known to TV audiences for the long-running series Northern Exposure, has also a limited career on the big screen.
The son of an electric lighting manufacturer, his parents divorced when he was nine and he supported himself as a waiter and a balloon messenger in his teens.
He made his big screen debut opposite Johnny Depp in the comedy Last Resort and then went on to star as Dr Joel Fleischman in Northern Exposure.
He quit with the series on its last legs to star as the cigar chomping attorney in Quiz Show alongside Ralph Fiennes.
Subsequent appearances included Bruce Beresford's Last Dance with Sharon Stone and the comedy Mother with Debbie Reynolds.
In 2000, he starred with Stockard Channing in Other Voices and went on to write. Direct and star in his own comedy Maze with Laura Linney.
In 2002, he starred in the comedy The Guru and The Emperor's Club with Kevin Kline.
