The humidity of small-town Florida adds to the steamy atmosphere of this well-made modern noir thriller. The underrated Ed Harris stars as a cop who falls for the seductive Madeleine Stowe. But, unfortunately, she is married to Charles Dance, who not only treats her brutally, but also has a mistress. When Dance is murdered, everyone is enmeshed in a typically tangled noir web. John Bailey's tight direction and Roy Carlson's terse script combine to make this a fine example of its genre. Harris, as usual, is excellent, as is Stowe as the dreamy femme fatale. The characters are well-rounded and there are enough plot twists to keep you guessing. Recommended.
