Two years after she was replaced by Anne Bancroft midway through shooting Seven Women after suffering a series of strokes, Patricia Neal came back to movies with avengeance in this terrific drama. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a World War Two veteran returning home to an unhappy family life, Frank D Gilroy's dramsa transfered beautifully to the screen with loving care. Martin Sheen and Jack Albertson (winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar) both repeated their earlier stage successes. Surprisingly, despite excellent reviews, great acting and an intelligent script, the film was not a box office hit.
