A combination of James Bond, martial arts thriller and Nintendo game. You know the scene: thousands of the villain's men get punched out, shot down and blown to smithereens, while the 'Allied Nations', led by Jean-Claude Van Damme with the Stars and Stripes tattooed on his arm muscle just like Popeye, sustain nary a casualty. Maniac warlord Raul Julia (a nice, wild-eyed performance in his last film) has a laboratory and torture chamber that, for those old enough to remember, look like leftovers from an U. N. C. L. E. film. Never mind, Raul still gives getting a $20million ransom for a few relief-worker hostages the old college try, makes a monster or two and gets to deliver such lines as 'Take him to the laboratory', before being dispatched to oblivion without even smudging Kylie Minogue's lipstick. As comic book action brought to life, this slugfest does the job.
