In another of cult Canadian director Atom Egoyan's takes on human despair, a tax inspector (Bruce Greenwood) spends his evenings at a strip club and becomes obsessed with one of the strippers who's having problems with her ex. The ex hates seeing Greenwood in the audience every night, so the tax man gets a shop owner with auditing problems of his own to go to the club to be his ears and eyes. Egoyan dots his movie with tantalising clues and, just when things seem to become clear, he reverses the meaning of these revelations. The result is a dark, confusing but maybe haunting experience for people who don't get out very much.
