One of those grim, violent tragedies that are darkly lit, have booming sound and seem to be shot in corners of rooms. Tim Roth is a hit-man who returns to the Russian-Jewish quarter of an American city where his family still lives in squalor. His father runs a news-stand and keeps a mistress while his wife lies dying. Roth's young brother, although bright, hasn't been to school in months. And there's a dumpling-pretty girl for Roth to come back to and bed. They're all doomed, of course, as if you couldn't tell from the surly, unsmiling performances. These are cheerless people without any real hope, and poor company indeed after a tough day at the office. Russian choirs drone mournfully in the background: all too much.
