Ken Olin, likeable actor from Hill Street Blues and Thirtysomething, made giant strides in his directorial career (this was his second effort behind the camera) with this graphic and heartrending story of the 1934 battle by rebel US cavalrymen to save 400 Army horses from being shot. Although no animals were harmed in ther making of the movie (filmed in Australia), it's so painfully well done that that's hard to credit and animal-lovers might be well advised not to watch. Don Johnson and Craig Sheffer do sterling work at the head of a quality cast that also includes Rod Steiger, James B Sikking, Gabrielle Anwar and Robert Gunton, who contributes the best of the supporting performances as Colonel Hardesty.
