Music and melodrama mix well in this lively tale of a jive quintet which is inveigled by a mobster on the run (Lloyd Nolan) and his conniving moll. The band is led by Jack Carson and singer Priscilla Lane who warbles, competently but the film is stolen by the scheming Betty Field. The film was Oscar-nominated for its title song but lost out to The Last Time I Saw Paris. On another interesting note, two directors appear in the cast: Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront, A Face in the Crowd, Viva Zapata) and Richard Whorf who alternated between acting (he was Sam Harris in Yankee Doodle Dandy) and directing (Champagne for Caesar and Till the Clouds Roll By).
