Only the outtakes at the end reveal some of the agonies director Penelope Spheeris must have gone through to obtain any sort of performance from her actors in this botched attempt to recreate the Thirties Hal Roach comedy series about the scrapes of a gang of kids. Visually, this is almost a perfect colour replica of the times when Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat, Spanky and their troop of tots ruled the kiddies market. But it's the sense of fun and spirit of innocence that obstinately evade capture, and embarrassment results.
