Originally released as The Parasite Murders, this was David Cronenberg's springboard to the status of cult horror/sci-fi director. With shades of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it's got everything for the connoisseur of the genre: dodgy medical experiments, parasites bursting forth from living bodies, sex maniacs running rampant through a luxury hotel, (sp)lashings of blood... Story credibility goes out of the window as Cronenberg votes in favour of special effects, diving straight into the gore, assisted by the indispensible services of make-up artist Joe Blasco. Subtle it isn't but it's entertaining enough if you're not squeamish. Also known as They Came from Within.
