Here's a romantic comedy that works hard at being both comic and romantic. The comedy's often on firm ground, with more than a dozen smart lines. The romance is less secure, with Debra Winger playing off Billy Crystal gamely, but rather less naturally than did Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally... Perhaps, like Crystal and Winger with their marriage, it tries too hard to please. He's a basketball referee - cue some nice reaction lines between diminutive Crystal and skyscraper players - she's a Paris airline official who loses his father's body there en route to a funeral. She's separated and vulnerable; he can't stop joking. He charms. She falls. They marry. But the cold light of USA brings not only wildly conflicting schedules and an inability to conceive, but a permanent visit from her doddery father (William Hickey, stealing the show). A recipe for disaster? You got it. Like their relationship, the film wears thin at times - but there's always the next set of Crystal cracks round the corner.
