Baseball star Ty Cobb was the stuff of legend. He was also mean-spirited, racist and self-centred. In this film Cobb, admirably played by Tommy Lee Jones, hires biographer Al Stump (Robert Wuhl) to give him a bit of a makeover and gloss over the more unsavoury parts of his life and character. The gap between truth and myth could have been fascinating but, sadly, it isn't here. This is largely because the film shifts focus, and you're often not sure whether is it supposed to be about Cobb or Stump. This, coupled with the fact that Wuhl can't really keep up with his co-star, makes Cobb a frustrating and unsatisfying film.
