Trickery, treachery, love violence and greed - yes, it's a story from the Bible. The tale of Jacob, his rivalrry with his elder brother Esau, his love for Rachel and his founding of the tribes of Israel is well told here, although this is no Cecil B DeMille spectacular. Matthew Modine plays Jacob with quiet dignity while Sean Bean is bitter brother Esau. Also in the strong cast are Joss Ackland, Irene Papas and Lara Flynn Boyle. The film fascinates, despite a script that is workmanlike rather than inspired, thanks largely to Sir Peter Hall's direction and the stunning Moroccan locations.
