The former stand-up comedian is best known for his big screen adaptation of the children's novel I Am David.
A graduate of the University of South California's Film School, he was awarded the Jack Oakie Award for Comedy in Film in 1984.
He began his career as a script reader before experience as a stand-up comedian led to him being cast in the US TV series Dirty Dancing.
Subsequent appearances included Sabrina The Teenage Witch and he also appeared in he movies Ski Patrol, Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do and Stealing Harvard.
He made his directorial debut with the independent film Life Sold Separately and also wrote and directed the Emmy-nominated series Freaks and Geeks.
In 2002, he also published Kick Me - Adventures in Adolescence about his youth in suburban Michegan.
