Although the film claims to be 'based on a true story', this is a heavily fictionalised and sentimental account of things that may or may not have happened in the Vietnam War. Ray Liotta and Danny Glover play US soldiers who promise to provide a new elephant for a village of friendly Vietnamese peasants. Joining them on this escapade as they take the elephant by water, road and air across the country are Corin Nemec, Denis Leary and a local child Dinh Thien Le. Once you get past the unbelievable characterizations of the Viet Cong army and the bizarre adventures of the Americans, you're left with a reasonably entertaining family film that'll work well with children who have absolutely no idea about the Vietnam war.
