Smurfit's breakthrough performance was as single mum Suzie opposite Hugh Grant in the drama About A Boy.

After training at Bristol Old Vic she landed a major TV performance as Lady Rowena in Ivanhoe.

Other TV roles have included Orla in Ballykissangel as well as appearances in Cold Feet and Berkeley Square.

She made her feature debut in Peter Yates' Run of the Country which she followed with The Leading Man with Jon Bon Jovi.

Smurfit went on to star in So This Is Romance with John Hannah and was cast as weathergirl in Danny Boyle's The Beach.

After About A Boy, she was cast as a right-wing villainess in the amiable martial arts caper Bulletproof Monk.
