This is an inventive piece of science-fantasy from that marvellous ex-Python Terry Gilliam. Set in 2035, most of the Earth's population has been wiped out by a deadly virus and the survivors live beneath the surface. A group of scientists send a reluctant volunteer (an excellent Bruce Willis) back in time to 1996 when the plague began in the hope that he can prevent the virus from happening. But Willis keeps missing the correct time zone and eventually ends up in a mental asylum in 1990. Here he meets psychiatrist Madeleine Stowe and raving loony Brad Pitt. Of course no one believes Willis is from the future but then a series of odd events begin to put doubt into Stowe's mind... Inspiring stuff and a visual treat.

Visually intricate, brilliantly scripted and perfectly acted, this is one of the greatest films ever made. Bruce Willis produced perhaps the most original performance of a type-cast career, and Brad Pitt makes an inspired lunatic come truly to life. The plot has more twists than a pig's tail on a roller-coaster and the script is generally brilliant and occasionaly utterly genius. A film you'll want to watch again and again, even if it is just to figure out what's going on.
