Darkly lit, set against perpetual rain and impending hurricane, this is Robert Altman's idea of a John Grisham thriller. Which is to say, not much like anyone else's. Characters talk at the same time and some of the dialogue's difficult to catch. Still, gradually a plot emerges. Kenneth Branagh, a hot-shot Savannah lawyer, estranged from his wife, whose methods have not endeared him to judiciary or the law, becomes involved with a girl (Embeth Davidtz) whose nutty father (Robert Duvall) has stolen her car. Branagh has him committed but, with the help of vagrant friends, Duvall escapes. It seems that he has kidnapped Branagh's children... more to this, of course, than meets the eye. Later developments lean heavily on the arm of coincidence, but the story's web is spun skilfully enough to draw you in.
