Claudia Weill, once one of Hollywood's most promising woman directors, has lost ground in recent years and this is another in a fairly uninspired list of TV movies from her Nineties CV. The made-for-cable drama focuses (or rather doesn't) on a crisis at a Wisconsin abortion clinic that becomes a battleground for opposing pro-choice and pro-life forces. The film tries much too hard to consistently show both points of view, at considerable detriment to its story, which remains a surface account of a hot issue, with surprisingly uninspired performances from a good female-driven cast including Pamela Reed, Diana Scarwid and Betty Buckley. As with so many of these social conscience dramas today, worthiness proves not enough without sufficient attention to the entertainment factor.
