Con Air

A group of America's deadliest criminals - including public enemy number one John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi's paedophile and a muscled-up Ving Rhames - hijack a convict transport plane. Nic Cage is on fine self-mocking form as the paroled ex-soldier who has to bring them to book. Terrific action sequences and decent performances in one of the finest movies of its type from the Nineties.

We've seen the one about crooks taking over the plane that's just transporting them to justice several times in recent years.

But this powerhouse of a film, full of the most explosive action imaginable, gives a whole new adrenalin rush to the old idea.

The worst criminals in America are being flown to a new super-secure prison.

'I hope this goes smoothly,' mutters one agent '... all those monsters on one plane.' Hah!

Caught in the middle of the ensuing carnage is Poe (a pumped-up Nicolas Cage, as an ultra-macho version of James Stewart), a paroled ex-soldier who works from within the plane to bring the escapees to justice.

Sensational editing will have you clenching your fists with tension, even though things get a shade too silly at the end.

Good entertaining movie despite the slightly implausable theme. Excellent editing of the time spent in prison, it said everything that needed to be said and conveyed the passing of the years brilliantly in a matter of minutes. The film was spoiled only by the last 15-20 mins by trying to milk the situation and throwing in some totally unnecessary 'action' scenes.
