Fancy two hours in the obnoxious company of a notorious Irish criminal called Martin Cahill, apparently a legend for his defiance of authority, relentless battle with the police and his weird family relationships?
Maybe not! Uncompromising writer-director John Boorman appears to see him as a likeable rogue in the Robin Hood tradition, but this is the man we see crucify a colleague on a snooker table only to find out he's innocent of a betrayal.
Worse, Boorman follows this with a 'Carry On'-style comic scene in a hospital as the victim seeks help. On the plus side, Brendan Gleeson gives a credible, exuberant turn as Cahill, Jon Voight has fun as an Irish cop, and the black-and-white photography is a technical tour-de-force.
