The General

Brendan Gleeson turns in an exuberant performance as Martin Cahill, the notorious Dublin gangster who met his end at the hands of the IRA. Flying in the face of what is known, director John Boorman paints Cahill as a likeable rogue - a sort of Irish Robin Hood - but there's no denying the power of the performance. Trivia: Ordinary Decent Criminal, starring Kevin Spacey, is loosely based on the General.

Fancy two hours in the obnoxious company of a notorious Irish criminal called Martin Cahill, apparently a legend for his defiance of authority, relentless battle with the police and his weird family relationships?

Maybe not! Uncompromising writer-director John Boorman appears to see him as a likeable rogue in the Robin Hood tradition, but this is the man we see crucify a colleague on a snooker table only to find out he's innocent of a betrayal.

Worse, Boorman follows this with a 'Carry On'-style comic scene in a hospital as the victim seeks help. On the plus side, Brendan Gleeson gives a credible, exuberant turn as Cahill, Jon Voight has fun as an Irish cop, and the black-and-white photography is a technical tour-de-force.

I think this film is brilliant. No. I think it's Fantastic. Never before has the real life of a criminal been told in such a way. I would say this film is best for people interested in Ireland's infamous crime history and it's my favourite Irish film and one of my favourite altogether. I think that the General, Martin Cahill would have liked this film as well. Inspirional.
