The brutal murder of a celebrated poet sparks off a race to publish her biography and is the starting point for this lifeless literary mystery. Writer Miranda Richardson aims to be first to get the life of Mary Swann in print and befriends the poet's best friend, Brenda Fricker, the developing relationship between the two women forming the heart of the film. Director Anna Benson Gyles steers her first film, based on a novel by Pulitzer prize winner Carol Shields, towards the enigmatic but, unfortunately, the whys and wherefores could be asked more of the filmmaking than the plot itself - there are just too many unanswered questions and loose ends to leave the viewer feeling remotely satisfied.
