This Doctor Dolittle is definitely for the Nineties, with our first shot of him being as a young boy talking to the animals until he's traumatised by the loss of his pet dog.

Now an adult - a busy surgeon and dad played by livewire Eddie Murphy - Dolittle rediscovers his unique talent when trauma strikes again, this time when he almost runs over a dog.

No-one believes he can talk to the animals and he's sent to an institution suffering from stress (yep, it's that Nineties pressure), but escapes to help our furry and feathered friends.

The technical wizardry that animates the animals is amazing and Murphy fits right in with a charming performance.

Good family entertainment, if a little rude for younger children.
