In a grimly ironic case of life imitating art, rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting a few days after completing filming on this dark crime thriller. Shakur and his co-star James Belushi play a pair of crooked police detectives who have devised the perfect scam: they lure a series of drug dealers into a fake deal, take their money and then shoot them. The murders appear to be 'gang-related' and the duo walk away scot free. Their scheme goes awry, however, when their latest victim turns out to be an undercover cop. Writer-director Jim Kouf admirably sustains a mood of anxiety, guilt and claustrophobia, but he loss his grip in the scenes involving Dennis Quaid as a vagrant with a hidden past, which seem to have strayed in from a different movie. Belushi and Shakur, however, bring a blazing conviction to their anti-heroic roles, but many viewers will find the film's bleakness and cynicism hard to take.
