Friends' talented and funny Jennifer Aniston has some trouble extending her splendid TV turn as Rachel into a feature-length performance as a selfish single advertising executive, forced to conjure up a hapless fiancé (Jay Mohr, who loves her) to promote her career.
But, oddly enough, Jennifer finds the Mohr isn't the merrier and instead fancies the older office womaniser - that nice Kevin Bacon, playing, and very well too, a nasty character.
There is a carefully laid supply of funny lines and amusing moments in this bitter-sweet romantic-comedy soufflé, but soufflés aren't meant to be bitter-sweet, which is perhaps why it fails to rise properly.
A great writer-director like Billy Wilder could have given this edge in the old days, but Glenn Gordon Caron makes it all appear too bland, just ready for TV, where it will just seem like an over-extended sitcom.
