The actor's big screen appearances have ranged from Thomas Vinterberg's Dear Wendy to skateboard romp Lords of Dogtown.
After attending a Catholic school in California's The Valley, he enrolled at California State University-Northridge.
He made his feature debut in the Walter Matthau comedy I'm Not Rappaport as a three-year-old cowboy in 1996.
Subsequent appearances included River Red and Music of the Heart before he was cast in the rock biopic Almost Famous in 2000.
He won a new legion of fans as Elliot, the illegitimate son of Jack in the award-winning comedy Will & Grace.
He appeared in Brainiacs.com and was Young Red Pollard in the horseracing drama Seabiscuit in 2003.
He also won through to the last three finalists for the role Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
In 2005, he starred in the offbeat drama Dear Wendy and Catherine Hardwicke's Lords of Dogtown.
