Director Abel Ferrara's philosophical, modern-day vampire movie is dazzlingly filmed in black and white, but its plot follows a more traditional course, as academic Lili Taylor attempts to come to terms with her new undead status. This truly disturbing, imaginative film isn't for all tastes, but, with Taylor's commanding performance and Ferrara's gutsy film-making, it's a very impressive addition to the catalogue of top-rate vampire movies. An ideally cast Christopher Walken appears to iconic effect in an extended cameo among the undead, and Mrs Tony Soprano, Edie Falco, heads up the rest of the cast.
