From lousy barber to incompetent cop seems a big jump but rap DJs Ed Lover and Doctor Dre manage it in this fun but ill-disciplined frolic. The two boys find themselves in the police force and on the case when their former employer gets topped, leaving them the salon. But someone else wants it, too. It's all pretty daft, really, but it is also a good excuse for lots of rap and hip hop music, so a treat for fans. Ice-T (who has since moved on to bigger things) makes an appearance and the two stars are obviously having a good time. Director Ted Demme gives the film a breezy style. Not bad for a first effort, but whether he'll catch up with uncle Jonathan (The Silence of the Lambs) remains to be seen.
