Mary Chase's heartwarming play and the 1950 film version will always be remembered for James Stewart's peerless performance as Elwood P Dowd, the eccentric, mild-mannered bachelor whose best buddy is Harvey, a six-foot white rabbit only he can see. Jobbing TV movie actor Harry Anderson's performance is an adequate substitute, but he's rather like the understudy forced to go on when the star is unavailable. Leslie Nielsen adds some needed star power as Dr Chumley, head of the rest home where Elwood is treated, and Swoosie Kurtz is an asset as his social-climbing sister. This conscientious but unnecessary TV movie is all a bit Dowdy.
