A stern drama, written by the late John Cassavetes and directed by his son Nick. Eddie (Sean Penn), an alcoholic, spends 10 years in an asylum, driven mad by his love for Maureen (Robin Wright Penn). Maureen escapes the gutter to marry Joey (John Travolta) but Eddie, released from the institution (even though he doesn't know what day of the week it is), returns to claim Maureen, leaving Joey with the kids. Except for the children, the characters are dislikeable - and too unbalanced, in a film that's gloomily unbelievable and unbelievably gloomy.
