The actress first attracted attention in the critically lauded Sundance Festival favourite Law Dogs opposite Sam Rockwell.
The success led to other high-profile roles in M Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis and Notting Hill with Hugh Grant.
Aged nine, Barton began her theatre career in New York with a lead role in Tony Kushner's Slavs!.
She soon segued into the lead role of Emma Hatrick in James Lapine's Twelve Dreams at the renowned Lincoln Center.
Early TV appearances included All My Children and she also portrayed the title role of Frankie alongside Joan Plowright in Frankie and Hazel.
On the big screen, she followed Lawn Dogs with 1999's Pups, a modern day version of Bonnie & Clyde for filmmaker Ash (Bang).
Recent appearances have included the lacklustre thriller Octane and the coming-of-age drama Tart.
