Despite an absolutely stunning cast, this Western, after some good opening battle scenes, just doesn't go anywhere, denying its talented players the chance to etch any decent characterisations. Leading lady Marguerite Chapman is too old for hero Audie Murphy (who's on screen a bit too much). Brian Donlevy is a stolid Quantrill and Scott Brady has virtually nothing to do. Set in the US Civil War, the film portrays a young Jesse James (Murphy) who joins Quantrill's guerilla army, a rebel band not too interested in fighting Northern soldiers, but preferring to wreak havoc on their own territory. Brian Donlevy plays a megalomanic Quantrill. Still it's vigorous, colourful Western fare with a few stars-to-be like Tony Curtis appearing in small but showy roles.
