Smuggler John Anderson Wade (Rutger Hauer) lives in a repressive Russia, where everyone is monitored and severly punished for crime. Double-crossed by hunky kick-boxing gang leader Mark Dacascos, Wade is killed, but when he's revived by bionic experiments his one thought is revenge. In this mediocre action movie's typically bleak futuristic landscape there's plenty of sleaze and violence, but little fodder for the brain. Hauer and Dacascos have the talent and power to make it work, but the script and handling let them down with a lack of credible plot development, rounded characterisation and narrative drive. Still, there's a plentiful supply of sex and gun-battles for those with basic instincts.
