This nicely cast, quirky, impressive little independent American comedy is loosely plotted as a series of encounters between obsessive New York losers, all trying to solve their relationship and career problems. The script, from writer/director (Living in Oblivion) Tom DiCillo, isn't always too funny, original or spot-on-target, but it is often gently amusing, touching and accurately observed. It may come down to whether you like such offbeat players as Matthew Modine, Daryl Hannah, Maxwell Caulfield and Catherine Keener, but, if you do, don't miss it. Modine is especially appealing as an out-of-work New York actor who lives with stylist Keener and finally has to descend to taking a bit part in a sexy Madonna video. Even this he fouls up. Caulfield is rather good, too, as Modine's smarmy actor pal who lands a soap job with sexy star Hannah.
