Chang Chen made his feature debut at the age of 14 in the leading role of a troubled teenager in Edward Yang's A Bright Summer Day.

They worked again in the 1995 feature, Mahong which was shown in the Berlin Film Festival competition and marked Chang's second collaberation with director Edward Yang.

Since then he has worked in such internationally acclaimed productions as Happy Together along with Tony Leung and Ang Lee's much praised action romp, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
