Action scenes and stunts are handled very effectively by director Kevin Hooks (Passenger 57), but that's not to say the rest of Black Dog is a great film. Patrick Swayze is in debt, so he's driving across America in his truck. He's an ex-convict, but he and his companions don't know that the load they're carrying actually contains expensive illegal weapons and is going to get them into some trouble. In a world populated by big guys with tough-guy names like Red, Earl and Jack, we know not to expect a movie with a searing comment on life and society. Singer Meat Loaf, Randy Travis and Randy Quaid also star in this daft but lively action hokum.
