Sidney Poitier is back as police lieutenant Virgil Tibbs, off on the trail of the gang behind a San Francisco robbery in this well-made third and final instalment of the series that started with In the Heat of the Night. There's a strong cast, plenty of fast-paced action and a sharp whiff of Seventies mood and atmosphere to keep going what's essentially a routine crime melodrama story. Poitier looks cool and relaxed in a part that fits him like a glove.
