Putting Biblical tales on film can be a two-edged sword. Thei either come out as rather superficial and minor 'epics', or they are too relgiously earnest for their own good. This version of the story of Jeremiah, the visionary prophet who made an enemy of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, leans towards the latter, although a strong central performance from Patrick Demsey is a major plus. Other good points are Klaus Maria Brandauer as Nebuchadnezzar, Oliver Reed as General Safan and a very authentic look to the film, which was made on location in Morocco.
