Walter Matthau reunites with Carol Burnett, his co-star from Pete 'n' Tillie and The Front Page, for this sweet and attractive romantic drama, in which he plays a lonely old widower who falls out with his son (John Stamos) when he plans to marry a feisty divorcee (Carol Burnett). Stamos makes it clear he thinks his dad's new love is coming far too soon after his mother's death, so can Matthau swing him round? As you'd imagine, this schmaltzy TV movie is determinedly emotional, then heartwarming, but the performances are super, with the late, great Matthau giving a slyly magnetic turn and enjoying evident rapport with both Burnett and Stamos. Based on a play by Richard Vetere, who also writes the teleplay, this appealing little item is directed discreetly by Matthau's son Charles.
