The Woodlanders

Period drama, screen version of the Thomas Hardy novel, starring Rufus Sewell and Emily Woof. A socially ambitious sawmill owner marries his daughter to the village doctor, but she is in love with a local woodsman. With Polly Walker.

After Tess and Jude, here's another dollop of doom from the master of misery Thomas Hardy. In rural England, Victorian woodsman Rufus Sewell is upset after the love of his life (Emily Woof) marries the local doctor. It's long and gloomy, but the story's fairly absorbing, Woof is excellent and the woodland settings are nicely done.
