McPherson's mainstream big screen debut was the comedy thriller The Actors with Michael Caine and Dylan Moran.
He earlier enjoyed success with the self-written and directed Saltwater, which won a CICAE Award for best film and the Berlin Film Festival.
A philosophy graduate, he became the writer in residence at London's Bush Theatre.
The Weir, which he wrote, transferred to the West End and eventually ran for nine months on Broadway.
Film work includes the screenplay for I Went Down and Endgame as part of the Beckett on Film series.
