Another truly amazing performance by Helena Bonham Carter highlights this outstanding and life-affirming movie about a 25-year-old woman dying from motor neurone disease. Eccentric thirtysomething Richard (Kenneth Branagh) endangers public life and limb in an attempt to fly from the top of a building and is sentenced to community service. This involves the care of wheelchair-bound Jane (Bonham Carter), a feisty and foul-mouthed rebel who gradually warms to Richard and eventually asks him to help her lose her virginity through the services of a gigolo. The film is much, much more than the sum of this bald synopsis and surely establishes Bonham Carter as the best young actress of her generation: her portrayal of the acidly humorous Jane is heartbreaking. The climax, as Richard takes Jane aboard the aircraft he has built, in a desperate attempt to get it - and their lives - aloft is absolutely right. Have a bucket handy if you must but see it.
