Pregnant Irish girl Felicia (Elaine Cassidy), in England to locate her boyfriend, who may have joined the British Army, falls under the care of Hilditch (Bob Hoskins), a catering manager in Birmingham. Dominated and humiliated by a TV cook mother, Hilditch has become a serial killer of just such lost souls as Felicia, videoing his victims during car journeys like the one he embarks on with Felicia as, pretending to visit his sick wife, he 'tries to help' her find her lover. Clammy and creepy, Hoskins has the character right down to the last weak smile, although he's almost undone by two religious hawkers while digging what's intended to be Felicia's grave and protests 'But I'm a catering manager'. This gaffe apart, director Atom Egoyan grips our jangling nerve ends tautly and rarely lets go. Paul Sarossy's widescreen lensing is not only intelligent but impressive enough for an Oscar nomination.
