A gentle, almost dreamlike, but borderline boring small-town tale of an unsigned love letter that falls into the hands of bookseller Kate Capshaw, who promptly conceives an animal passion for her new employee (Tom Everett Scott) at the store. In a role intended to showcase her talents, Capshaw is frankly a bit of a pain. And she's far too mature to have the luminous (only 10 years older) Blythe Danner play her mother. The coastal atmosphere of Loblolly-by-the-Sea is gratifyingly well caught and Ellen DeGeneres (bookstore manager) and Tom Selleck (fireman in love with Capshaw) have their moments. It may not be enough, though, to keep you awake.
