Sometimes expensive special effects and lots of action aren't needed to make you keep watching. So it is with this small-scale but absorbing drama from Australia. Jack Thompson plays Harry, the loving and tolerant father of Jeff (Russell Crowe), who is gay. Okay, it doesn't sound like much of a plot, but its gentle development makes it worth sticking with. Based on a successful play, it has the two main characters talking to the camera, a stage device that works well here, although Thompson does occasionally seem to step out of character. Still, that's a minor quibble about what is, overall, an enjoyable film. Thompson and Crowe (not the most obvious casting for a gay man) are excellent and supporting roles are well cast.
