What saves this preposterous horror thriller is the fact that it is quite exciting, despite the daft storyline. Hunter (Stephen McHattie) is on the trail of a mysterious creature left over from prehistoric times that he believes has great healing powers in its blood. But someone else is after the beast, an FBI agent (Brion James), whose partner was killed by the animal. Despite the word 'prehistoric', the thing isn't a dinosaur but a sort of vicious giant rat that feeds on dead bodies. Bits are quite nasty, but the climactic confrontation with the monster in its underground lair is pretty tense. Not good, but it has its moments.
