Damien O'Donnell
Born: Dublin, Ireland
O'Donnell's debut feature East is East catapulted him into the front rank of British film-makers.
The affectionate story about the Asian experience in a bleak 50s Salford won rave reviews and was a box office hit.
O'Donnell first garnered attention for his short film Thirty Five Aside and was presented with the Best New Director award by Alan Parker.
He went on to make the short comedy Danger Doyle's Doo and the time travelling Short and Curlies with Charles Dance and Bill Paterson before helming East is East.
Next up was What Where as part of the Beckett Film Project and the touching British road movie Heartlands with Michael Sheen and Mark Addy.
In 2004, he directed the acclaimed drama Inside I'm Dancing about two men suffering from cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy who forge a life of their own.
